Whining About the Weather

No snow yet...
After two months of mild weather following a surprise October blizzard, we're seeing temperatures in the single digits with even colder wind chills. The poor plants! No blanket of snow protects their frozen toes. I've heaped hay around the bases of the rose bushes but the forsythia bush, confused by the mild weather into blossoming again, has had its little yellow blossoms turned to tattered flags of ice.

Even the sky looks cold. This morning the horizon is pale yellow above the mountain and icy blue beyond that. Trees are silhouetted against the burgeoning light, their shivering branches clattering out an SOS in the bitter wind. Small birds fight for places at the seed feeder and woodpeckers have reduced the suet in its wire cage to a small raggedy lump.

The cold is not expected to last beyond Friday when once again temperatures will bounce into the high 30s and lower 40s. Not a snowflake is in sight for at least the next ten days. I much prefer winter to be winter, with deep, plant-protecting snow. I don't mind the cold when I can go out and play in it.

Playmate from last year.

when I could play in the snow, I was with you there! I can say that I am glad there isn't more snow, but I am a gardener at heart and your writing about the weather reminded me of that. I don't want a twelve inch storm, but I think the trees and the shrubs and the sleeping perennials would appreciate a six inch blanket to start! The nice, wet stuff. And maybe a few days later, on a Friday night, a storm between midnight and 4 a.m., that leaves the puffy, feather-light powder... four to six inches.

And we could awaken to that very special silence.

I loved your entry.

That sounds a lot like a Texas winter! Except maybe not quite as cold. But I agree - I don't mind cold if I can go play in it!

Still so small patches of a light snow, but only where the sun doesn't touch.I was in that mild hiking a lot these last 2 days.

Geez, that kind of cold I don't even want to be able to comprehend. That is COLD! Here's wishing you some warmth from a southern neighbor. Okay, maybe not neighbor, but still wishing you some warmer days.

All sorts of things are blooming here that shouldn't be and I am sure we will have a north east wind soon that will bring temperatures in the teens and spoil all tha spring flowers.

Thanks for stopping by Jeannette. I'm all for any amount of snow at this point!

Barbara S - weatherman says at least another week before a storm is even in sight!

Brian M - looking forward to building another one sometime this winter!

lol Tabor - that;s what we had today.

OOTP - the mild weather is a treat to some but I like my winters to be snowy!

Rubye - when I lived in VT we had below zero temps more often than not. Here in MA the weather is mild compared to that!

Anne - things won't bloom at all if roots get frozen and broken as things freeze and thaw repeatedly. We NEED the snow!

That is a truly beautiful snowman! I wish we had more snow here in Ohio!

We're having a similar winter here, so far. Though nothing has been fooled into blooming. You make whatever the season sound so beautiful though. Always a pleasure to see the world through your eyes.

Having grown up in the "snowbelt" of the Midwest and not live in Southern California, I do not miss the snow and cold one bit. But, I agree with you, if it's going to be winter-- BE WINTER and get on with it. Everything looks better with a white coating of snow :-)

Stay warm, xo jj

Thanks BragonDorn - doesn't look like I'll be making a new one anytime soon!

Hilary - thanks. I can't take pictures like you do so I have to resort to words!

JJ - I would miss the snow, I know. I don't mind the cold but I prefer mine served with a good pile of the white stuff!
