the pond at sunset

Mornings have been silent since last November. Now I wake to bird song and all day long I can hear twitterings and chirping as the birds go about the business of staking out territory and making nests. In the late afternoon, close to the supper hour, the spring peepers begin their concert. If I should wake late in the night, I can stand on the doorstep in the moonlight and listen to the little frogs fill the dark with their mating calls.

Just before sunset a few geese make their way to the pond across the street. There are ducks nesting there, too, and gulls fly over. It's too early for insect noises but the great spring song has begun.

Oh, the peepers! I miss them ---

What we have in Arizona: no birds, just a thin wind whistling around the corners of the house. The mountains, as usual, sit silently.

Love your reminders of what's happening back home ---

It has indeed. It's just before daybreak here, and I can hear their symphony.

Oh, I come here to read about spring, Pauline...it seems she's going to bypass our area this time around. We had a lot of snow yesterday and we'll be shovelling again!today.

But the birdsong does continue, even in the chilly weather. There are just not as many yet as we usually have.

So thanks for writing about spring. I can imagine it so well reading your words.

I loved your poem...you just keep getting better and better!

This is the 'silence' that urbanites describe when they're away from traffic noise!

Dick - when people come here they say they ca't sleep because of the animal and bird noises!
