It Won't Be Me

Over and over I thank my lucky stars that I am not responsible for inventing new things. If I was in charge, we'd still be back in ancient times, hanging out in trees and eating fruit with worms. There'd be no fire, no wheel, no sewing needles, no sickles or hoes or threshing machines, no cotton gins or paper or railroads, no TV or packaged food or rocket boosters or cell phones. Think how far we've come just in the past twenty years. Then watch this and be amazed at all you didn't know!

Amazing! But is it good?

Well, 20th CW, I guess it depends on where you're standing, what you want, and what you see as good.

In the words of C. S. Lewis, "What you see and what you hear depends a good deal on where you are standing; it also depends on what sort of person you are.”

No one person came up with anything. Collectively we co-create the world. You've been a part of it, too, Pauline!

And I thank you sincerely for your contributions!

Wow! These numbers boggle my mind. I'm definitely not in the mainstream of technology, but I'm further along than I was 5 years ago. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Reya, thanks for the encouraging words but I just use the things, I don't have a hand in their invention!

HHB - glad you got to see and hear,

Barbara - I'm somewhat computer savvy though no techie. When my son shows me the things the software company he works for is doing I can only gape in awe.

Mind boggling ... and all in the name of progess.

I wonder how far we can actually go?

Meanwhile literacy levels and the capacity for critical thinking decline. At this point to me it frankly looks like we're entering a kind of technologically well-lit Dark Ages. I'm not against technology, just in favor civilization, and wish we could keep both...

Ride - progress doesn't always move us forward...

Paul - I like the phrase "Well-lit Dark Ages." When were we ever really "civilized?"

What I want to know is who pays Brady James' cell phone bills? We get charged for every text message, and the Bean has to curtail his texting instincts drastically because of being an impoverished student....
I'd be hanging in the tree next to yours eating the wormy fruit! but I'm glad the techies did what they did....it means I get to hang out, albeit virtually, with the likes of you!
But then again, it seems harder and harder to connect with people in the real world.

.....love that C.S.Lewis quote.

wow - thanks for sharing this. i shared it via my FB account.

Moly - Florida isn't so far away so when I'm visting next (I have a daughter living there), I'll let you know and we can climb trees together ;)

Sky - that's where I found it, on a post by my son! I was intrigued by the numbers and grateful that I hadn't had to invent any of those things!

But it is because we "stand on the shoulders of giants" (as Isaac Newton once said (I think)) that newness is invented.
I am just happy for invention of the written word -- a wondrous device.
The best of new years to you, incase I hadn't said so before.

Thanks, goatman and happy new year to you, too! Thanks, but no shoulder standing for me. I'm a feet on the ground kind of girl...

Thanks for the comments and you may certainly use that analogy with your students.

Thanks for the link, Pauline...I thought I had left a comment here last week, but possibly Google ate it. I was awed by it.

I have always wondered what kind of mind makes an inventor. I know one thing for sure...it isn't mine!

Pauline said...

Tabor - the kids were delighted with the image! Thanks!

Jean - Tous les deux!

Nor mine, Marion! That's why I'm so grateful no one is depending on me to come up with this stuff!
